The Sock Features I Was Obsessed With as a D1 Athlete
Share
Every sport and every athlete has their thing. It’s what adds flair and fun to the event, with major athletes these days turning arenas into full-on runways. We’re talking practice, pre-game, draft day style.
While I may not have quite the social cachet as those folks, sports style had its own moment as I was growing up playing. As a basketball player, a big part of that was socks and shoes. This is what I cared about then, and what I still can appreciate today!
Performance Fabric Was Non-Negotiable
Basketball is a sport of constant starts, stops, jumps, and quick cuts. The last thing I wanted was a sock that got heavy with sweat or was so thin that it slid around inside my shoe.
The best socks found that sweet spot: breathable enough to keep my feet cool, but thick enough to provide a little extra cushioning when I landed. It was a balance you didn't really notice until you wore a pair that got it wrong. And I find myself gravitating towards that blend for my exercise socks still.
Give Me All the Arch Support
If there's one hill I'll die on, it's this: a snug, supportive arch band is one of the most underrated features in a performance sock.
That little bit of compression around the middle of my foot felt like a warm hug. It kept the sock locked in place, made my shoes feel more secure, and made long practices as comfortable as they could be, while I tasted iron in the back of my throat (IYKYK).
Even today, if a sock has great arch support, I'm sold.
Nike Elite Socks Were Peak Cool
If you played basketball in the late 2000s and early 2010s, you already know. Nike Elite socks weren't just socks; they were part of the uniform.
Everyone wanted them. And if you could perfectly match your Elite socks to your practice shorts, warm-up gear, or pre-wrap? Couldn’t be beat.
Half the fun was showing up to practice looking put together before anyone even touched a basketball.
Shoes Were Seasonal
Unlike our current moment, where light shoes and socks are definitively cool and dark make you look like an out-of-touch Boomer, basketball shoes then floated in and out of trend depending on the year.
I had black shoes, I had white shoes, but I was never brave enough to go beyond neutrals into red, yellow, or even crazier, neon green. I felt it was easier to match my cool socks to a solid base rather than start mixing in a whole complementary color palette.
Can’t Forget the Slides
The real hoopers know this one.
The game ends, the shoes come off immediately, and the slides go on. Walking around tournaments, hanging out between AAU games, or heading back to the hotel, slides were essential equipment.
My go-to? The classic Adidas Adissage slides with those infamous massage footbeds. Yes, the little pokey bumps looked intimidating. Yes, they hurt the first few times you wore them. I wore mine everywhere.
Some Things Never Change
Years later, I don't spend four hours a day in the gym anymore, but I still notice the same things I noticed as an athlete.
I want socks that stay put. I want enough cushioning without feeling bulky. I appreciate a supportive arch.
And if they help keep my feet fresher after a long day? Even better.
That's exactly the thinking behind Circe Socks.
We designed them for people who are constantly on the move—from chasing kids through the park to coaching youth sports or squeezing in a workout after work.
Our antimicrobial silver-infused fabric helps reduce odor-causing bacteria on the sock itself, while a comfortable, performance-inspired fit keeps your feet feeling supported from morning to night.
Because great socks aren't just for athletes anymore.
They're for anyone who remembers that sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.
