Crew vs. Ankle Socks — The Great Generational Debate

Scrolling IG and TikTok these days, it’s hard to miss the tongue-in-cheek posts about Millennials vs. Gen Z. As a millennial, I can acknowledge how often they’ve gotten our generational differences right. Another category they’ve pegged us on – crew socks vs. ankle socks! 

If you're a fellow Millennial, there's a decent chance you spent the early 2000s hiding your socks like they were a social liability. The lower the sock, the cooler you were. Bonus points if they didn’t match, like, at all. 

Then Gen Z hit the scene.

Suddenly, crew socks weren't just acceptable; they were mandatory! Socks became an accessory. Pulled up high. Bright white. Paired with sneakers. Sometimes with loafers. And somehow...they make it look cute. That cool, clean girl aesthetic that we’re all yearning to be! 

*Millennials collectively look down at their ankles and wonder if they've become the fashion equivalent of side parts, infinity scarves, and skinny jeans* 🙈

Different socks serve different purposes, and we all have our preferences. Who is to say which is the better choice? But for fun, let’s see if we can convince you to choose a side either way!

Crew socks are having their moment, and rightly so. These socks have that effortless, timeless look. 

They're classic. They're crisp. They say, "Yes, I summer on the Cape," even if your closest body of water is a backyard kiddie pool. And you can wear them with anything these days. Birks, shorts, dresses, matching workout sets – you can’t miss. 

Team Ankle Socks

Ankle socks have their place. They're understated. Practical. Reliable. Lightweight, breathable, and perfect for being on the move, running, or simply surviving another humid Northeast summer. Less fabric, more airflow. 

And sometimes, you aren’t coordinating a ~look~; you’re just looking for a supportive sock to get you comfortably through the day in your favorite pair of shoes.
